We leave the market town of Oakham by following part of the town's Heritage Trail passing the Butter Cross and Pump, 5 hole stocks and Castle gates (fortified manor house). We continue along the merged Viking, MacMillan and Hereward Ways through residential areas and along the edge of the A606 to skirt the northern edge of Rutland Water. At the north east corner of the water we walk a few metres along the dam to look out over what was once Normanton Village. In the distance on the south east shore you will see the top remains of Normanton Church. The villagers saved this by filling the bottom half with rubble and forming a causeway to the shoreline. This remaining upper hall is now a wedding venue. Do not continue over the dam as there is no way out on the other side and you will have to continue on around the water to Edith Weston village. We continue east along the Rutland Round to Empingham Church (Caution A606 crossing). We then pick up the merged MacMillan and Hereward Ways and head to Ketton. The views here are dominated by the stone quarry works and the terrain becomes like a moonscape. Continue onto Geeston and Collyweston Bridge and along the Hereward/Jurassic Ways and Ketton Drift to Easton on the Hill. All Saints Church here has a Labyrinth and Peace Garden where we will have a prayer stop. We continue under the A1 following a diversion to avoid a broken footbridge and on into the historic market town of Stamford.
